Chair Restoration

, , , , ,

I have acquired some rather beautiful old chairs.  They are being restored and re-upholstered at the Woodworks, a social enterprise in Bath.  These chairs were donated and come with a history and it would be interesting to know what it is.  This made me think of two quotes from Grayson Perry from the Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman.  “The Look of age is also an important component of what we find beautiful.”  And … “Age lends authority to an object”.

These chairs will  eventually be covered with my own designed fabric.  This will add another layer to the chairs’ history.

My blog will chart the progress of the chairs.

Bonnard Exhibition

I had the good fortune to spend an inspirational morning surrounded by Bonnard’s shimmering and glowing canvases at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel. Here is the link

Bonnard’s use of colour combined with his unusual compositions which were influenced by Japanese graphic art have had an enduring fascination for me.

And the quote for the day:

“It seemed to me that it was possible to translate light, forms and character using nothing but colour without recourse to values.”  Pierre Bonnard

Visit to Basel

On a flying visit to Basel in Switzerland last week to see my parents and family.  The city was still quite wintery and covered in snow.

Basel is a city that most tourists pass on their way to the mountains.  However, it is well worth a visit with its numerous museums, a very well preserved old town and a rich cultural life.

Above is a corner of the old Munsterplatz and below a view over the Rhine.

The Tinguely fountain outside the new theatre is constructed from parts rescued from the old theatre.  Jean Tinguely was a Swiss painter and sculptor best known for his sculptural machines.  This is the first time I have seen it frozen over.

After a lot of hard work, I have finally completed my MA in Textile Design. The final show opened at the American Museum in Bath on 20th October.

My show consisted of two distinct colour ways and stories.  The first has the theme of  “The Summer Garden and Meadow”.  The second image shows my “Night Garden” range.  I am particularly proud of my upcycled chairs covered in luscious furnishing velvet.
